Prepare for Oracle Apps R12 Installation
    Tuesday, February 20, 2007
    Register for R12 upgrade
In today's post I will discuss on steps you should do/need for Oracle Apps R12 installation. Most of these steps are written w.r.t. to Installation on Linux but I'll try to mention any additional software required for Windows or any other platform.

Where to download Apps R12 Software ?
First thing you need is Oracle Apps R12 which is available at eDelivery (Click here to go to eDelivery) or you can order software DVD's via Metalink. You don't need to download all CD's .

You might have to register initially with Name, Company & email address & try again after 1-2 days (You might not get confirmation, just try after a day)
Select product as E-Business Suite & your platform , For Linux you have to select Part Number B35903-01 (There are total 72 CD's {you don't need all 72 CD's} with total size as 35GB {this is just software size & not actual installation})

In actual you have to download following 64 CD's rest others are for NLS, 10g AS & BI CD's

Oracle Applications Release 12.0 Rapid Install Start Here - Disk 1 (5 CD's)
Oracle Applications Release 12.0 for Linux x86 Rapid Install RDBMS - Disk 1 (3 CD's)
Oracle Applications Release 12.0 for Linux x86 Rapid Install Databases - Disk 1 (6 CD's)
Oracle Applications Release 12.0 for Linux x86 Rapid Install Databases - Disk 2 (7 CD's)
Oracle Applications Release 12.0 for Linux x86 Rapid Install Databases - Disk 3 (7 CD's)
Oracle Applications Release 12.0 for Linux x86 Rapid Install Databases - Disk 4 (8 CD's)
Oracle Applications Release 12.0 for Linux x86 Rapid Install Databases - Disk 5 (7 CD's)
Oracle Applications Release 12.0 for Linux x86 Rapid Install Databases - Disk 6 (2 CD's)
Oracle Applications Release 12.0 for Linux x86 Rapid Install Databases - Disk 7 (7 CD's)
Oracle Applications Release 12.0 for Linux x86 Rapid Install Databases - Disk 8 (2 CD's)
Oracle Applications Release 12.0 for Linux x86 Rapid Install Tools - Disk 1 (3 CD's)
    Oracle Applications Release 12.0 for Linux x86 Rapid Install APPL_TOP - Disk 1 (6 CD's) Oracle Applications Release 12.0 for Linux x86 Rapid Install APPL_TOP - Disk 2 (1 CD)

    Oracle Apps R12 Installation Document
Next thing you need is Oracle Apps R12 Installation Guide which is available at http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B34956_01/current/acrobat/120oaig.pdf

What should I do if I don't have Linux Operating system as well ?
If you don't have Linux O.S. you can install it on any other operating system (CD's mentioned above are for linux download according to your O.S. ). If you are curious to install it on Linux you can download linux from http://edelivery.oracle.com/linux

Do I need to Install any other software before Oracle Apps R12 Installation ?
On Unix/Linux you don't need to install any other software (You should have all required o.s. packages as mentioned in above installation guide) but as you don't need to install JDK prior to Apps R12 install (with 11i you have to install JDK prior to installing Apps)
For windows you still need other software like mks toolkit (cygwin my recommendation for test server), VC++

    User & Mount point/File system
I will recommend two user install (one for database tier & another for middle tier also called as application tier) Though you can install both database tier & application tier under same operating system user. For Vision Instance you need around 161 GB (133GB for database & 28 GB for application tier) space . For instance without dummy data you need 73 GB space (45GB DB & 28GB application tier)

    CPU & RAM
For testing Installation you can try as low as single CPU (1.6 GHz) and 1GB RAM (This was spec of my laptop where I installed for testing purpose, You can try with low configuration as well)

    Staging Area

Its good idea to create staging area using script adautostg.pl available in Start Here CD. Refer to Page 30 of above Installation Guide. Advantage with staging area is that after start CD you don't have to manually insert CD's and Installer will automatically pick next CD from staging Area. You can pass on configuration setting on first 3-4 screens & once installer starts you can sleep & next day morning you can see complete installation. In case of any failure or subsequent installations (If you have to install more than one Instance its always better to install using Staging Area)

      Hi,

I'm installing now R12 on linux redhat 4 machine. i have enough space (175GB FREE). I ran the RapidWiz and it was interrupted. When i checked the log it looks like this
      <<
Enter the location of the CD labeled Oracle Applications Rapid Install - Databases Disk 1 :

Checking Disk contents in - /mnt/temp/StageR12/startCD/Disk1/rapidwiz
Checking Disk contents in - /mnt/temp/StageR12/oraAppDB/Disk1
Checking Disk contents in - /mnt/temp/StageR12/oraAppDB/Disk1

      Unzip Count:195

      Processing Disk1....
      ....2..3.4....10

      Processing Disk11....

      Unzip Failed:

Unable to complete install of database
      >>

When i checked Disk11 in the stage area, it has many zip files. I did UNZIP -T to test the zip files and i found this corrupted one:

      --> unzip -t data_dat1172.zip
      Archive: data_dat1172.zip
      testing:
      tx_data51.dbf bad CRC
      50fdc778 (should be defcddda)
      At least one error was
      detected in data_dat1172.zip.
      !!!!

Zip tool version is: UnZip 5.51

I'm trying to replace it by the same file from the original DVDs but couldn't dind it. Should I manage to unzip it manually? If yes, will it work ?

      Appreciate your help
      Firas

      Firas,
From where you staged CD ? (downloaded or from Oracle's DVD pack) source or while staging zip might be corrupted . Unzip manually or download this CD again from edelivery

      Hi Atul,
I created the Stage area from DVDs pack from Oracle.

i tried to unzip the file manually, it created the file but is it a valid one as when i tested the zip file (post above) I gor a BAD CRC problem ??
Could i keep the current stage area and change only the oraAppDB/Disk11 ?? How ??

      Please advise
      Thanks
      Firas

      Hi again,

Actually i have unzipped the file manually and the rapidwiz continued. Now when it reached the post-install checks screen, there was a problem in the database availability. When i tried to open the database, i got this error im alert.log:

      ORA-00202: control file: '/u01/oracler12/db/apps_st/data/cntrl01.dbf'
ORA-27037: unable to obtain file status
Linux Error: 2: No such file or directory
      Additional information: 3
      Fri Mar 2 23:20:02 2007
ORA-205 signalled during: ALTER DATABASE MOUNT...

I really can't find the control files in the data directory or anywhere!!!

Now i'm doing egrep to fetch the stage area zip files and get them from there. Is that OK?

      Any ideas?
      Please advise.

      Thanks a lot in advance
      Firas
      Any ideas

      Firas,
This should not be the case , I did installation after downloading CD's from edelivery & it went smooth . You can try copying cntrol file from staging area.

Make sure your prereq. steps are done & you have required zip & other operating system RPM's

      Hi Atul,

Thanks for taking time to reply.

I have done all the pre-steps required. Anyway i'll double check and see. Then i will update this post

      Thanks a lot
      Firas

    • At 5:54 PM, Blogger Firas said…

      Hi Atul,

Actually i downloaded all required rpms but when i tried to install them. It failed ( Install and upgrade as well) because of conflict with old ones.

Please notice that i have Vision 11.5.10.2 Vision on this server too. Now all old vision processes including DB are down to install R12.

Anyway, it seems that one of the files in the DVDs is corrupted. That's why i started staging again using new DVDs pack. Of course i have to clean and restart as you said. Hopefully it will work.

      Appreciate your help Atul.

      Regards
      Firas

      Hi Atul,

      My Qn:
      Regarding R12 installation:
In the PC first you installed Windows-Vista, then installed VMware so it become virtual-machine, then you installed LINUX under the Virtual-machine, then R12 installed under LINUX.

Could you tell me this system is become dual-booting?

When we start the system, is it wait for to select Win or Linux, or Virtual Machine?

      Also,
Why you installed R12 under VMware? Is it for RAC environment?

      Thanks and Regards,

      Jo.

      Jo,
I installed VMWare on top of windows operating system & in windows operation system using VMware I created a linux virtual machine (So this is not dual boot) Boot is single only i.e. Windows. each time I start my machine on windows then start VMware software from programs on windws & then start linux machine on this VM software . Advantage of installing this way is that I got windows & linux at same time & I prefer apps on linux

      Hi Kumar.

I have installed apps 12 on my laptop using external hard disk as u explained.

I have laptop 1 => windows vista (internal HDD) => VM Ware (internal HDD) = > linux 32 (external HDD) => apps R12 (external HDD).

I have laptop 2 => windows vista (internal HDD) => VM Ware (internal HDD).

1.Can I use my External HDD to run apps 12 using my Laptop 2?

      OR

2.If I plug my External HDD onto another Laptop with VM Ware will it work? If YES what configurations are required?

    • At 6:20 PM, Blogger Atul Kumar said…

Yes you can provided you copy virtual linux server configuration file & virtual disk (If any of this is on laptop1)

If virtual server configuration file and harddisk file are on external hard disk then connect HDD to laptop 2 and then create linux virtual machine on laptop 2 using configuration file created on laptop 1 .

For more info check VMware site on how to move virtual machine across server

      Hi all!

Stupid Question: if I install the whole "stuff" with the base directory in an external USB disk of my Linux box am I able to use it in another Linux box without further install?

In other words, does the installation remains confined ONLY in the BASE directory?

      Many Thanks!

I have seen this on my instance as well few times and in most of cases this happens if memory on your system is less as darabase SGA itself is 1 GB then memory is required for various other processes so no need to worry either increase memory on system or reduce sga and memory of various other components and try accessing apps http://host.domain:port (8000 for 0 port pool)

      Hi Atul,

Can u tell me which VMware u installed on top of ur Windows OS?

I'm looking to install Oracle APPS on my Ext HD after installing Linux on it. But I don't want to remove the internal HD of my laptop (because it's a hassle in mine). Oracle VM Server is an OS by itself and so will have to set for dual boot. But u have mentioned that ur system is a single-boot system only.

So I was wondering.. which VMware did u use?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Thank you for this great post!

      Only one question...

Can you specify exactly the necessary packages that must be installed on Enterprise Linux 5 for a Oracle Apps R12 Installation?

      Regards

      Hi
Wanted to create stage for R12. However my server is not yet ready (hardware changes required), and to save time, I was wondering if I can create the stage on linux 32bit system in the meantime. (server is 64bit).
If i create the stage on a 32bit system is it usable on a 64bit?
