Install Oracle Enterprise Linux on VMWare

    Register for R12 upgrade
In last post at http://becomeappsdba.blogspot.com/2007/03/installing-vmware-linux-for-oracle-apps.html I discussed about Installing VMware on your windows machine which we will use to install virtual Linux machine on your Windows PC or Laptop. On this Virtual Linux machine, We will finally Install Oracle Applications R12 (Note that Oracle Applications R12 is not supported/certified on VMWare but you can install for testing purporse) .

In today's post I will install Oracle Enterprise Linux downloaded from eDelivery . Download first four CD's (32 bit) & unzip them on your windows harddisk. I unzipped them under "c:\Atul\Downloads\Linux" directiry & extracted iso files. Start VMWAre from Start/Programs Menu & select Machine which we installed yesterday. On Menu bar click on
VM -> Settings (Ctrl + D) Select CD-ROM & under Connection select Use ISO Image as mentioned in Picture.

Once you select first iso image & click on "Start This Virtual Machine" , it will start Oracle Enterprise Linux Install on your Virtual Machine.

    Select Installation type as Server

You can select Automatic Disk Partitioning but if you want to partition as per your needs you can choose Manual Partition.

Enter Hostname for your machine, I selected my site name i.e. teachMeOracle.com

When it prompts for second CD , From VM -> Settings , click on CD-ROM and change location to second iso file and then for third CD. Make sure installation completes successfully. In next post I am going to cover step by step Oracle Applications R12 Installation on Linux Virtual machine which you installed just now on your windows PC/Laptop. Make sure you have downloaded R12 Disks .

      hi Atul

Can I install VMWare on an External hard drive and then install R12 on that.

      pls reply
      thanks
      Santosh

      Yes Santosh ,

You can install VMware on External Harddisk & install Oracle Apps R12 on this. I have done it via USB external Hard disk which I'll be covering in my next post.

      Atul

Would there be an advantage to create a virtual machine with the OS components on the local hard drive and then only the files for the R12 install on the USB external disk drive? Or should you just install everything on the external hard drive?

      Thanks,
      Brian

      Hi Brian,
I don't see big advantage on installing OS component on Local drive , I suppose its better to install everything on external drive if this is for Apps as this is easy for moving entire APPS across servers from one machine to other

      Hi Everyone

I've just come across this post which is interesting as I've just done exactly this. I now have a VMWare client running Oracle Enterprise Linux and E-Bus R12.

It works! However, I would caution you on expecting speed if you cannot give the client about 2Gb RAM.

I gave the VMWare client 1.3Gb and it uses about the same in SWAP at all times with R12 running. Obviously this means that the external hard drive is taking a severe IO hit running E-Bus.. I might look at putting the SWAP on another disk to improve performance.

The only issue I had during the install was some .zip files not being copied to the staging area correctly. Other than that, all went well!

      Good luck!

      Chris

      Use unzip file_name.zip

Unzip can be in any order, order doesn't matter as long as all files are unzipped properly

      Hi Atul,

Great work. You performed single node installation of Oracle 12 on Linux VMWare. Did you attempt to install using multinode option that uses the Shared APPL_TOP feature? or mutlinode option can be possible using your configuration. Thanks.

      Best regards
