Oracle Apps R12 File System Changes
    Thursday, January 18, 2007
    Register for R12 upgrade
Sometime back I discussed about R12 release dates & few major changes at Click here to check R12 release date and few changes in R12 . In today's post I am going to cover File System changes in R12 and talk about new TOP (INSTANCE_TOP) in Application Tier.

If you are familiar with Oracle Apps 11i , you can easily understand picture on your right. This is file system for 11i with various TOP's , APPL_TOP, ORA_TOP, COMMON_TOP, DB_TOP and DATA_TOP. With Multiple Middle Tier configuration came shared APPL_TOP (only APPL_TOP used to be shared ) . After shared APPL_TOP came shared Application Tier (All three TOP's on Application Tier, APPL_TOP, ORA_TOP and COMMON_TOP were shared across servers). With this came challenge of configuration files which are specific to a server mainly iAS & 806 configuration file. If you have configured Shared Application Tier (sharing ORA_TOP as well) in 11i then this problem was overcome by creating conf directory in COMMON_TOP.

In Oracle Apps R12, You can see new TOP called INSTANCE_TOP in Application Tier. This TOP will now hold any configuration files (specific to that server) , Certificates (If SSL is enabled SSL Certificates & any other certificates specific to that server) and related log files or pid files (for Apache or any other process). In diagram tops with <>ST can be shared across servers (Shared Tier) and INSTANCE_TOP will be specific to Server.

Next three pictures are taken from Ivo Dujmovic's presentation at Oracle Open World "Deep Dive: Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 New Technology Stack". These Pictures are self explanatory & will help you in understanding Oracle Apps R12 File System.

This shows Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 File System Layout

This shows Directory/File Structure for Instance TOP in R12

This Picture compares file system in 11i with File system in R12

      Subbu,
There are three oracle_home one for database 10.2 one for iAS webserver 10.1.3 and final one for 10.1.2 for Forms Reports. These three have different binaries & can't share same oracle_home . Moreover what so ever is latest certified with Apps is introduced in R12 .

I hope I have cleared your doubt if not kindly elaborate your question

sorry atul i think subbus doubt waz that in e-bussiness suite oracle release 12 application oracle home is 10gR1 then why oracle home 10gR2 is not considered where as 10gR2 is certified with oracle

Question - If I am running linux and want to deploy a shared file system for the apps tier NOT THE DATABASE - what options do I have besides NFS - I tried ocfs2 and it looks like Apache 10.1.3 has issues....

    • At 5:56 PM, Blogger Atul Kumar said…

Tim there are third party software sharing (NetApps is one of them or may be veritas) . Can you share issues you are facing in Apache in ocfs2 (Its better to keep pid file & scoreboard file on apache on local drive for better performance)

      Hi Atul,

If I understand it correct, the new Instance_Top in Rel 12 will contain config & log files that used to be a part of appl_top or comn_top in previous releases. If that is right, can you provide any info, or direct me to a link or document, that covers which files/directories will move from old appl_top or comn_top to the new instance_top?

      Regards,
      Sunil

      Hi Atul,

We have installed R12 on AIX, and wnat to know either installed Vision instance is INDIA localized.
I'm not sure either it is india localized or not/shoulw we need to apply any pathces .
Please let me know on this.

      Thanks,
      Manohar.

You have to apply patches specific to india localization. Check in metalink for india localization patch or check with Oracle support

      Hi Atul,
We have R12 installed on Linux. We are unable to use frmcmp to compile forms. We tried to manually correct the frmcmp.sh file as mentioned in the Note:431324.1 of metalink. But it did not solve our problem. We did not apply the patch bcoz our version of oracle is 10.2.0.2.0 but the patch is for 10.1.2. Can you pls suggest anyother solution ? Vijay.

A newbie question, pardon me please if this sounds too silly.

I installed a single node VIS database on my local linux machine. I can start/stop database/apps using addbct.sh,addlnctl.sh/adstrt.sh scripts.

now if i want to access database only; it gives me error i.e.

      [prompt@localhost bin]$ $ORACLE_HOME/sqlplus
      Error 6 initializing SQL*Plus
Message file sp1 lang.msb not found

SP2-0750: You may need to set ORACLE_HOME to your Oracle software directory

As i understand, there is conf_VIS.txt file that sets environments.

there is another file on directory base_dir/db/tech_st/10.2.0 i.e. VIS_hostname.env. if i run this one, it sets oracle home but still i can't invoke sqlplus on local machine.

Question is what file should i run that parse and sets all proper environments so i can run SQLPLUS on local machine?

will much appreciate your response here.

      thanks,
      sanjay papdi

ok, got the answer -- just went through the file addbctl.sh and copied the procedure.

      thankyou anyway..

      Sanjay,
In future please use either http://onlineAppsDBA.com or http://teachMeOracle.com/forum

Right environemtn variable file is second one
      base_dir/db/tech_st/10.2.0 i.e. VIS_hostname.env

and you need to run it like

      cd base_dir/db/tech_st/10.2.0
      . VIS_hostname.env

      or

      . base_dir/db/tech_st/10.2.0/VIS_hostname.env

check if ORACLE_HOME set properly or not by running

      echo $ORACLE_HOME

      Good luck for your learning.
