Installing Oracle Applications , Become Apps DBA II
    Sunday, July 30, 2006
    Register for R12 upgrade
So lets start learning from how to become Oracle Apps DBA . This apps dba training is completely free only thing I am looking is your feedback & what you want to hear more, If you are reading this post first time I will recommend you that you start from first post i.e. from Saturday, 29 July 2006.I hope you as Oracle Apps DBA Understand basic Architecture of Oracle E-Business Suite (If no read my first post ) .
Lets Start with Installation, You can start Installing Apps on Unix, Linux or Windows. I recommend Linux if not then Unix & finally Windows (I find it difficult working on windows as you need additional component to install E-Business Suite ) . For Installation Guide visit Oracle PDF at http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B25516_08/current/acrobat/r115102ins.pdf This E-Business Suite Installation Guide consist of 166 pages & you need to Install all. Read Chapter 1-8 Single User Installation or Two User Installation. As by now you are aware that E-Business Applications Two Tier Database & Application , so first User Oxxxxx is for Database Tier & Second User Axxxxxx for Application Tier. If you are new & Installing it first time better Install everything on Single Machine, Database Under User Oxxxxx and Middle Tier under Axxxxxx.
Then you can Install Oracle Applications by Inserting CD's one after other or by dumping all disks to one location ( Universal Installer will not prompt to insert CD if you staged/dump your CD on Machine it in proper way, Pg 1-12 , page 24 of Guide), If you are Installing Oracle Apps first time, Select Single Node(Also called Single Machine) Installation. Go to Chapter 2, on page 29 of Guide , you will see screen by Screen navigation path for Installation ( Believe me its very simple and just 30 pages all screens so nothing much to read ). After installation forget Chapter 3,4,5 (these are for Advanced Installation Option - Look them once you are comfortable with Simple Instalation) go directly to chapter 6 , Page 141 (This describes how to Check/Access Oracle E-Business Suite 11i Installation) Just 10 pages. So here complete your Oracle 11i Application & that biggest challenge in becoming Oracle Apps DBA . If you face any Issues during Installation post your problem in some Forum or Metalink , else drop a comment on this Post.

How to do Multi Node Installation on Apps 11i ?
If you are comfortable & now want to know how to do multinode Installation for Oracle Applications 11i then follow Chapter 3 (p65- p106) of guide Oracle applications Installation Guide Using Rapid Install Release 11i at http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B25516_08/current/acrobat/r115102ins.pdf

Tomorrow I'll discuss file system & directories which you/dba's/apps dba have Installed today , What oracle application component sits where ? That will be helpful to understand you Oracle Application . Plsssssss leave comments on this post, depending on that I'll get feedback if its useful or am I wasting your & my time .

    Happy Learning Oracle Apps DBA.

Appreciate your effort to help newbies.

I have downloaded 11i for linux from oracle website. I have a question can I install 11i from the hard disk without burning it into DVD's.
If I had to burn them then what content would go on which DVD, for example the download contains disks labelled Disk1...Disk11, how many disks should come on one DVD.

      Hi Anonymous ,
Thanks for your compliment, I appreciate your comments but I'll be more happy if you update your name, it creates more intimacy with my readers.

Yes you can install directly from dump on your hard disk . Infact thats better way if you install it from disk ( called as staging area as you don't have to insert CD/DVD again & again).

Usually one DVD can store 3-4 GB data & I suppose if your total installation dump space is 12 GB , 3-4 DVD's should be enough .

Thanks for all the support - I have one more question for you . I have the software downloaded to disk .. For the Ebsuiness suite install am I required to have 250GB of HD space?

    • At 7:06 AM, Blogger Atul Kumar said…

      Vidya,
I suppose 120GB would do for 11.5.10 . around 67 GB is enough for 11.5.9 vision.

      Hi Atul,

I want to asked some questions about Oracle Apss :

      1. When I setup fresh install there's one setting that make me doubt, it's about country specific functionalities. What would might be the problem and how to solve it assume that my country is not included in the list and I choose another nearest country?

      2. How to configure PL/SQL Log & Out Directory. Just erase all directory links under utl_file_dir or just the tmp directory and then change to another directory we choose? I'd read oracle docs but still not clear on how to setup it.

      3. About database initialization parameter, the installation doc from oracle wrote that : "The current init.ora settings allow for a total 100 connections. However , after the standard setup is complete, only a few users can be connected ... ." I compared the init.ora and init(SID).ora files from my vision machine and fresh install machine, other than directory links all are the same. So what caused only a few users can be connected and how do we change it because I don't know which one to change.

      Thank you.

Hi Atul, I am trying to install Oracle11 EBS on Windows vista. Ofcourse I am beginer. During rapid install, after the system check it gave me one "x" result i.e. system could not find the hard drive(cmd.exe command) where I have Drive F: as an external drive and path during the load is F:\Oracle.

And few with "!" result: it could not find the VC++ as I loaded Visual c++ 2005 on to my c: drive. VC++ is loaded automatically with out giving me any options to select directory. So the system loaded into default directory to "C:\program files\microsoft visual studio\....." (which contains spaces in path??). One more is "System Compatibility", I think it is because of Vista operating system. Can I ignore this item if not What I need to do?

      Hello Atul,

I am new to Oracle Apps but not to Oracle or Linux. But I am failing to install the oracle Apps on Linux installed on vmware. rapidwiz fails while performing system checks.

It errors out with - Unable to create directory with proper privileges

Kind of surprising, mount point exists and I could create a directory and file too.

Could you please throw some light on this.

      Thanks in advance

BTW the information provided in the web page is very helpful

i am trying to install EBS on 2 win2k3 machines as a multinode config using 1 for app and 1 for db. the DB install went fine but the app install does not allow me to use the congi file created by the db installation and errors out with error:

RW-20019: No install actions have been found for this machine. Continue on to other uninstalled machines in your configur
ation, or fix the configuration file to correctly call out this machine.

the names in the file seem to make sense and correspond with the hostnames of the servers

      any advice?

      Hi Atul,

I am basically a sql & pl/sql developer since 5 yrs. Now, recently I started to learn about Oracle Apps. Your website gave me clear understanding about the difference between technical and functional. I am learning Oracle apps on my own. I thought of installing oracle 11i apps on my laptop which has config of 160 gb hdd, 1gb ram and windows vista as OS for learning purpose. I have downloaded that software from oracle website.I am more interested for Oracle HRMS technical could you please suggest me whether Oracle 11i installable on windows vista.

Have you ever restarted the server after installation? If yes, then did you find all the services up and running? If yes again, how do you do that, what are those binaries which one needs to run or put in /etc/rc*.d so that next time somebody doesn't suffer as I am suffering right now.
