    Auditing in Oracle Applications
    Tuesday, February 27, 2007
    Register for R12 upgrade
Most of data in oracle Applications is quite important but some tables are very critical & sensitive . From security reason or Audit compliances you as an Apps DBA should know

    - Who changed sensitive tables ?
    - At what time data was changed ?
    - What was value before & after change ?

If you wish to track this information in Oracle Applications, I am sure most of you will say this can achieved by enabling Audit Trail in Oracle Applications but you need to take care of following things w.r.t. Audit Trail in Apps

    - Make sure you plan purging policy for Audit/Shadow tables which will be created during Audit trail
    - Consider for performance overheads if Audit Trails is enabled on too many applications tables
    - Better to disable Audit Trails during major Upgrades (Shadow tables may change during version upgrade so its better to archive before upgrade )

    Steps to enable Auditing
Define Audit Installation (Security -> AuditTrail -> Install)
Define Audit Group (Security -> AuditTrail -> Groups)
Run Audit Trail Update Tables Report to Enable Auditing (Submit Concurrent Screen)

    Few key points for Auditing
--Auditing in Apps can be done on Row by Row basis or Individual Column of a table
--If you change any of your definitions for auditing, you must rerun Audit Trail Update Tables
--"AuditTrail Update Tables" report creates shadow table with first 26 characters of table & appended by _A

    Metalink Notes related to Auditing

    105630.1 Setup & Usage
60828.1 Overview of Oracle Applications AuditTrails

    Oracle Collboration Suite
    Monday, February 26, 2007
    Register for R12 upgrade
With today's post I'll cover another Fusion Middleware product which I am using for quite some time now i.e. Oracle Collaboration Suite .

Major components in Oracle Collaboration Suite are
    -Real Time Collaboration
    -Content Server
    -Mail Server
    -Calendar
    -Meetings
    -VoiceMail
    -Fax
    -Threaded discussion
    -Workspaces

Few reason why an Enterprise should prefer Oracle Collaboration Suite against other Collaboration Tool in market:

    1. Easy to Use Content Management tool with Version Control & fine grained access policy at various levels for regulatory Compliance
    2. Secure way of communicating instantly with individuals or groups in and across enterprise using text, voice or conferencing features of OCS for problem solving, mitigate risk and deliver crisp and instantaneous communication to users across globe
    3. Single Integrated view of oracle mail, meeting invitation, voicemail, fax and threaded discussion from single integrated box
    4. OCS establishes process controls across all content with a centralized repository to cost-effectively audit, retain, archive, and manage content for compliance—and to react with agility when new regulatory pressures appear.
    5. Adaptability of business processes with Service Oriented Architecture
    6. Highly secure Oracle Messenger solution built on XMPP standard & archived interactions (chat / web conference) into database

Questions you should ask before Implementation:
    - How many user are going to access OCS ( Smaller, Medium, Large , Very large )
    - What all component of OCS customer is planning to use from following (Mail, Mobile, RTC, Content, Calendar, Search, Discussion)
    - Customer want to access internally (Intranet) or externally as well (Internet) over SSL or Non SSL
    - Availability / Failover Strategy (What is acceptable downtime during planned & unplanned outages) , Does customer want to implement Failover site & any backup strategy they are already following
    - Scalability - Plan for growth - How much growth customer is expecting in Usages in future
    - Any specific Security requirement at Enterprise level
    - How many Instances (Development / Test / UAT/ Production) customer is interested

Installation/Upgrade/disaster recovery/High Availability/Troubleshooting/SSL implementation for Oracle Collaboration Suite coming soon ..

Prepare for Oracle Apps R12 Installation
    Tuesday, February 20, 2007
    Register for R12 upgrade
In today's post I will discuss on steps you should do/need for Oracle Apps R12 installation. Most of these steps are written w.r.t. to Installation on Linux but I'll try to mention any additional software required for Windows or any other platform.

Where to download Apps R12 Software ?
First thing you need is Oracle Apps R12 which is available at eDelivery (Click here to go to eDelivery) or you can order software DVD's via Metalink. You don't need to download all CD's .

You might have to register initially with Name, Company & email address & try again after 1-2 days (You might not get confirmation, just try after a day)
Select product as E-Business Suite & your platform , For Linux you have to select Part Number B35903-01 (There are total 72 CD's {you don't need all 72 CD's} with total size as 35GB {this is just software size & not actual installation})

In actual you have to download following 64 CD's rest others are for NLS, 10g AS & BI CD's

Oracle Applications Release 12.0 Rapid Install Start Here - Disk 1 (5 CD's)
Oracle Applications Release 12.0 for Linux x86 Rapid Install RDBMS - Disk 1 (3 CD's)
Oracle Applications Release 12.0 for Linux x86 Rapid Install Databases - Disk 1 (6 CD's)
Oracle Applications Release 12.0 for Linux x86 Rapid Install Databases - Disk 2 (7 CD's)
Oracle Applications Release 12.0 for Linux x86 Rapid Install Databases - Disk 3 (7 CD's)
Oracle Applications Release 12.0 for Linux x86 Rapid Install Databases - Disk 4 (8 CD's)
Oracle Applications Release 12.0 for Linux x86 Rapid Install Databases - Disk 5 (7 CD's)
Oracle Applications Release 12.0 for Linux x86 Rapid Install Databases - Disk 6 (2 CD's)
Oracle Applications Release 12.0 for Linux x86 Rapid Install Databases - Disk 7 (7 CD's)
Oracle Applications Release 12.0 for Linux x86 Rapid Install Databases - Disk 8 (2 CD's)
Oracle Applications Release 12.0 for Linux x86 Rapid Install Tools - Disk 1 (3 CD's)
    Oracle Applications Release 12.0 for Linux x86 Rapid Install APPL_TOP - Disk 1 (6 CD's) Oracle Applications Release 12.0 for Linux x86 Rapid Install APPL_TOP - Disk 2 (1 CD)

    Oracle Apps R12 Installation Document
Next thing you need is Oracle Apps R12 Installation Guide which is available at http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B34956_01/current/acrobat/120oaig.pdf

What should I do if I don't have Linux Operating system as well ?
If you don't have Linux O.S. you can install it on any other operating system (CD's mentioned above are for linux download according to your O.S. ). If you are curious to install it on Linux you can download linux from http://edelivery.oracle.com/linux

Do I need to Install any other software before Oracle Apps R12 Installation ?
On Unix/Linux you don't need to install any other software (You should have all required o.s. packages as mentioned in above installation guide) but as you don't need to install JDK prior to Apps R12 install (with 11i you have to install JDK prior to installing Apps)
For windows you still need other software like mks toolkit (cygwin my recommendation for test server), VC++

    User & Mount point/File system
I will recommend two user install (one for database tier & another for middle tier also called as application tier) Though you can install both database tier & application tier under same operating system user. For Vision Instance you need around 161 GB (133GB for database & 28 GB for application tier) space . For instance without dummy data you need 73 GB space (45GB DB & 28GB application tier)

    CPU & RAM
For testing Installation you can try as low as single CPU (1.6 GHz) and 1GB RAM (This was spec of my laptop where I installed for testing purpose, You can try with low configuration as well)

    Staging Area

Its good idea to create staging area using script adautostg.pl available in Start Here CD. Refer to Page 30 of above Installation Guide. Advantage with staging area is that after start CD you don't have to manually insert CD's and Installer will automatically pick next CD from staging Area. You can pass on configuration setting on first 3-4 screens & once installer starts you can sleep & next day morning you can see complete installation. In case of any failure or subsequent installations (If you have to install more than one Instance its always better to install using Staging Area)

For new Installation features and Step by Step Oracle Apps R12 Installation on Linux VMware on your laptop stay tuned with this blog .

Is Oracle Fusion really ConFUSION ?
    Wednesday, February 14, 2007
    Register for R12 upgrade
If you ask question "What is Oracle Fusion ?" to yourself I suppose every one will have different opinion. I would like to hear from you all in your words ( via comments on this post ) about what you think is Oracle Fusion .

    Common confusion over Oracle Fusion
Most Common confusion over Fusion among most of guys I discuss/meet & also mentioned by Steven Chan in his post is thinking Oracle Fusion Middleware & Oracle Fusion Applications are same. In actual Oracle Fusion Middleware will be used in providing/building Oracle Fusion Applications using Existing Oracle Applications (Oracle E-Business Suite, Siebel, Peoplesoft, JD Eward).

Oracle Fusion Middleware is collection of Oracle Middleware products i.e.
--Oracle Application Server (Portal, Wireless, Forms, Reports, discoverer, Webcache, OC4J)
-- Oracle Identity management (OID, SSO, Web Access Manager, CA, Identity Federation)
--Oracle SOA Suite (Service Oriented Suite)
--Oracle Collaboration Suite (RTC, Mail Server, Discussion, Content, Calendar)
--Oracle DW & BI (BI Beans, OWB, OLAP, Express Server, OSA, OFA, Datamart )
--Oracle development Tools (Designer, developer, SCM, forms, reports)
    -- Oracle Data hubs

    and
Oracle Fusion Applications will be collection of Oracle Applications i.e.
    --Oracle E-Business Suite / CRM
    --Oracle Peoplesoft enterprise
    --Oracle Siebel CRM
    --Oracle JD Edward Enterprise

These fusion applications will use Fusion Middleware mentioned above

Few links which talk about Oracle Fusion Middleware & Fusion Applications are

    http://blogs.oracle.com/schan/newsItems/departments/fusionApps

http://oracle.anilpassi.com/oracle-fusion-development-tools.html (Good one for developers & techno functional)

    http://blog.oraclecontractors.com/?cat=4

http://www.oracle.com/applications/fusion.html (Good one for Oracle Fusion Applications Road Map)

More on Service Oriented Architecture (SOA Suite) and Oracle Fusion coming soon...

Leave your comments on what you think is Oracle Fusion ? Is this just another Jargon ?

Upgrade Oracle Applications to 11.5.10 CU 2
    Saturday, February 10, 2007
    Register for R12 upgrade
This post is coming bit late & I know lot of you might be wondering when Oracle Apps R12 is in market why I am still writing on 11.5.10 Upgrade . Looking at quesries/doubts/document request by many of my readers in mail and in forum at http://teachMeOracle.com/forum I thought of covering entire 11.5.10 upgrade and its related docs in this post.
This post will focus on 11.5.10.2 which is oracle apps version 11.5.10 with CU 2 and patch number is 3480000 and related metalink note is 316365.1 . Minimum prereq AD patch for 11.5.10.2 is AD.I.2 (4337683)

    Please Note:
    1. Patch 348000 (11.5.10.2) is for 11.5.9 or lower version , If you are already on 11.5.10 and which to apply CU2 then this is not right patch for you.

    2. Steps mentioned here are for upgarding your apps version 11.5.X , This post doesn't cover upgrade procedure from 10.7 or 11.0.3

    3. If you have language other than US then you have to apply translated version of patch as well
    4. To reduce Upgrade downtime you can use staged APPL_TOP methodology mentioned in metalink note # 242480.1 Using a Staged Applications 11i System to Reduce Patching Downtime
    5. MRC schema is no more used from 11.5.10 onwards so you can drop MRC schema after upgrade so there is no need to maintain/synchronize MRC before or after 11.5.10 (CU2) upgrade

    6. 11.5.10.2 requires database version 9.2.X and higher so you can upgarde to 9.2.X or 10.1.X before Upgarde . If you wish to upgrade to database 10.2.X then its better you do it after 11.5.10.2 Update.

    7. Since I upgraded Financial & HRMS system so I will focus on steps related to these module but check optional steps mentioned in metalink note # 316365.1 , There are some additional steps for Windows which are not covered in this post

    8. To reduce patch downtime online help patches can be applied at later stage

    A) Pre Update task
    Compulsory Steps
    -----------------
A.1 As mentioned above apply AD.I.2

A.2 Update Autoconfig Tech Stack template files - Autoconfig uses Template files to build files specific to your applications

A.3 Run Technology Validation Utility - This will test minimum tech stack components required to run 11.5.10.2 (Tech Stack components are database, forms & reports, discoverer, Jinitiator, JDK, OJSP, JDBC, libraries for web & form server )

A.4 Check OATM step mentioned in optional steps below. If you are not migrating to OATM mentioned above then prepare your table space to include new space requirement and new products . Read me of patch 3180164 will help you in creating additional tablespaces.

    Optional Steps
    ----------------
A.5 Manual Update script - Run this script to find optional & compulsory manual steps you should do before upgarding (This script is specific to an Instance and vary instance to instance)

A.6 Convert database to OATM (Earlier tablespace were based on OFA/Optimal Flexible Architecture where each product used to have one data & one index tablespaces so there were around 200+ tablespace which was difficult to manage which is now moved to ATM/Application Tablespace Model which is simple to manage & there are around 15 table spaces)

A.7 This steps is only required if you are using audit trails & shadow tables name > 26 characters. For auditing purpose you may have auiting enabled for Instance which you want to upgrade then you must change shadow table names (I will cover more on auditing in oracle applications in coming post) before any new columns can be added . HRMS & Payroll customers with Auditing enabled focus on this. If you are not sure if any of your shadow table name is > 26 then use script FNDATCTBL.sql provided with patch 3872242

A.8 If you are using any of product which require ilog planner libraries then apply related patches

A.9 Unmerge of Contacts from TCA Process is long running process during 11.5.10.2 upgrade process so if you wish to reduce downtime during upgrade
then run this program before upgrade else it will be executed during upgrade
    process

    Apply Maintenance Pack
    ===================
    1. Shutdown application tier services

    2. If your database is not 9i upgrade it now

    3. Apply maintenance patch . This is unified driver

    4. Apply any additional languages patches (If your installation is multi language)

    Post Update task
    ==============
    1. Apply Interoperability patch (If you upgraded database to 10g)

    2. Register new product , If you want to use any product installed as part of 11.5.10.2 you have to manually license it via OAM

    3. Drop MRC schema (As mentioned above MRC schema is no longer required from
    11.5.10)

    4. If you are not using HRMS Pack I before upgrading to 11.5.10.2 then you have to apply HR legislative updates

    5. There are product specific updates which you should carry out with your
    functional consultant.

For complete list and extensive steps to upgrade follow metalink note # 316365.1

OID to OID/Active Directory/iPlanet other LDAP Server Integration
    Tuesday, February 06, 2007
    Register for R12 upgrade
In Today's Post I am going to cover overview OID to other LDAP Server Integration. Other LDAP Server can be Oracle's Internet Directory or Sun's iPlanet or Microsoft Active Directory (These are standard directory Servers but you can integrate OID with other third party LDAP servers as well)

Two way / One way Integration
You can integrate to synch changes one way only i..e. from Other ldap server OID or both way i.e. OID to other ldap server & vice-versa. (For Two way Integration you should have access to Update other LDAP Server)

    Various OID Server Instances
    Under OID there three services
    - OIDLDAPD Server which is used for normal directory processing
    - OIDREPLD Replication Server (To replicate entire OID to other OID server)
    - ODISRV Directory Integration & Provision Server (This is the server/services used to integrate OID Users/Groups/objects with third party LDAP Servers)

By default OIDLDAPD & ODISRV Instances are started as you start OID using OPMN but you still need to start one more Instance of ODISRV for Integrating OID with other LDAP Servers

ODISRV is by default Up why I need additional ODISRV Server ?
Default ODISRV is used by Provisioning Services i.e. to povision users & groups from OID to Oracle Applications i.e. Portal/Workflow/Discoverer... So for Integrating OID with third party ldap server including OID we need another Instance of ODISRV.

How to start ODISRV & check related logs ?
You can start additional ODISRV instance using OIDCTL command

    oidctl connect=[tns_alias] host=[oid_hostname] server=odisrv instance=2 configset=0 start

    to stop it use

    oidctl connect=[tns_alias] host=[oid_hostname] server=odisrv instance=2 stop

Logs related to above odisrv process will be in $ORACLE_HOME/ldap/log/odisrv0X.log where X is instance name.
Other log files will be at $ORACLE_HOME/ldap/odi/log/[profile_name].aud & [profile_name].trc

For Other things on OID to OID or other LDAP server Integration (iPlanet/AD) and significance of audit & trace log files mentioned above including Synchronization Profiles in OID..

    Coming Soon ......
