Migrate to UK as Oracle Apps DBA
    Monday, April 30, 2007
    Register for R12 upgrade
Today's post is dedicated to Non-UK resident Oracle Apps DBA's who wish to work in UK.

In order to start working as an Apps DBA in UK, you should have a valid working Visa (For non UK residents). This Visa can either be sponsored by your UK employer (Most employers don't prefer to sponsor visas) or you (as an individual) can apply for Visa under HSMP (Highly Skilled Migration Program).

There are three steps if you wish to move to UK for working as an Oracle Apps DBA.
    1. Getting Visa (My recommendation, Go for HSMP instead of someone sponsoring your Visa)
    2. Entry clearance (For those not currently in UK)/ FLR (For those who are already working in UK under working Visa sponsored by company in UK)
    3. Finding right job/project (We can help you on this) on permanent/contract basis.

HSMP takes around 4-6 weeks and EC/FLR (Entry Clearance/Further Leave to remain) takes another 4-6 weeks. You can apply for HSMP via agent or yourself (my advice DON'T apply via agent) For more information on HSMP see below. Once you get HSMP next step is to find Oracle Apps DBA Job in UK, which can be either permanent or on contract (My recommendation, go for contracting). Based on your experience you can get 30-65 K £ per annum on permanent employment and 300-700 £ per day on contract basis (usually for a period of 3-6 months with extensions).

How to get HSMP or more information about HSMP ?
In order to clear HSMP you should get 75 points in various categories (Education, Earning, Age ...) and should clear english language requirement. (Graduation in English or ""IELTS"" cleared)

For more information on HSMP Guidelines click here and for HSMP Form Click Here
For Apps DBA Jobs in UK, Two good sites which you may wish to bookmark are
    jobserve.com and cwjobs.co.uk

If you are Oracle Apps DBA with 3+ years of experience and wish to work with Us mail your CV at jobs@teachmeoracle.com

How We can help you ?
We are group of Highly Qualified, Technically Proficient, Independent Oracle Apps consultants who work on project basis (in Team or Individual). We can help you in finding right client/job/project or even help you in moving to UK (No charges and No obligation). so next question coming to your mind might be

Why are we doing this ?
Our AIM is to build network of technically good Oracle Apps Consultants (Technical/Functional/Developers/DBA's) so
If you think you can handle entire/part of project on your own or wish to explore your potential in UK market shoot a mail at jobs@teachmeoracle.com

    Application Integration Architecture
    Sunday, April 29, 2007
    Register for R12 upgrade
Oracle recently announced Application Integration Architecture to
integrate its various applications (11i/R12, Siebel, peoplesoft,
third party application and custom applications). AIA (Application Integration Architecture) will also be used in Fusion Applications.

Key terminology in Application Integration Architecture
---Enterprise Business Objects (EBO) - are generic representation of business objects like customer, sales order, invoice, etc... These are entities that describe how business runs.
---Enterprise Business Services (EBS) - are specific action that occur
against Enterprise Business Objects(mentioned above). For ex. adding/deleting/modifying an customer, raiseing sales order...You can also think EBS as web service implementation of EBO (Enterprise Business Objects)

How Oracle is targeting to integrate various applications ?
(E-Business Suite, iebel CRM, Peoplesoft, third party application and custom application) answer to this is Application Integration Architecture via Integration Packs
Process Integration Pack - Integration is usually costly, difficult and
prone to break during upgrades. Oracle via Application Integration
    Architecture is offering sustainable integration.

Oracle Application Integration Architecture (AIA)- is standard based, open platform designed to make it easier to handle business process across oracle applications (E-Business, Siebel, peoplesoft), third party and custom applications. Using AIA (Application Integration Architecture) Oracle is providing pre-built integration pack for E-Business, Siebel, peoplesoft. These Integrations are based on standard common object model. These standard business objects can be extended by companies based on their specific requirement. Same common business object model is going to be used in Fusion Applications.
Currently oracle offers two components with AIA,
    A) Process Industry Packs
    B) Industry Reference Models

Oracle has released Siebel CRM ondemand integration pack for E-Business Suite.

    Access Manager: WebGate Request Flow
    Sunday, April 15, 2007
    Register for R12 upgrade
For basics on Access Manager (earlier Oblix COREid and now Oracle Identity Management Component) follow previous links

    - Access Manager Overview
    -Access Manager overview II
    -Installing Access Manager / COREid

WebGate is webserver plugin which communicates between user and access server (another component of Access Manager). Webgate is like communicator/plug-in which accepts users request via Web Server (Apache, Oracle HTTP or IBM Web Server) and communicates with Access Server component of COREid/Access Manager.
If request is protected by policy (already defined using Policy Manager), it sends user authentication challenge based on authentication policy defined in access server for that resource. Once user is authenticated it then checks authorization policy for that resource and depending on authorization policy access is granted or denied for that resource (URL) to user.

Typical example for that is lets assume user request for resource http://teachmeoracle.com/aboutme.html where teachmeoracle.com is webserver listening on port 80 and resource /aboutme.html is protected by policy (already defined by access server console. Coming soon in near future). As per policy only "authenticated users" and whose IP ddress is 198.16.X.X are allowed to access this resource (aboutme.html)

    Assumptions:
    A) You already have installed , Identity Server, WebPass, Access Server component on some servers.
    B) You have configured/installed Web Gate on webserver hosting site teachmeoracle.com
    C) Resource /aboutme.html is protected by policy mentioned above.

Here are steps which will happen
    1. User types URL in his browser
    2. Request hit to web server which is configured with webgate/accessgate 3. WebGate communicates with Access Server component of Access Manager/COREid to see if resource is protected.
    4. Access Server replies to web gate with authentication and authorization policy for that resource.
    5. Based on authentication scheme , web gate ask for corresponding authentication challenge (LDAP username/password or any custom form authentication)
    6. Web gate accept username/password from user and (If authentication is netpoint over LDAP server) passes on t Access Server which in turn checks username/passwords with Directory server (LDAP Server) configured with this Access Server.
    7. If authentication is successful go to next step, if authentication fails go to step 9
    8. If authentication is successful , it checks if user is authorized to access this page or not. So if client making request is with in IP 198.16.X.X then resource is granted. If user is not from this IP range access will be denied for this resource.
    9. If user authentication failed access be denied or next process will happen as defined in authentication fail action defined in policy manager.

Other autherization policy may be like
    A. You can define specific users authorized for a resource.
    B. A Group of users authorized for a resource.
    C. Authorization based on Role
    D. Based on IP address of client

You can also define time window under which that resource will be available so like Monday to Friday 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM

More on Oracle-Oblix COREid,Oracle Access Manager coming soon...
    Difference between WebGate/Access Gate.

    Sunday, April 08, 2007
    Register for R12 upgrade
Based on high influx of mail from users requesting difference between Oracle Applications Release 12 and 11i , I decided to dedicate this post to outline few major technical difference.

    Database:
    Database Version in 11i (11.5.9 & 11.5.10) was 9i Rel 2 where as in Release 12 its 10g R2 (10.2.0.2)

    Application Tier:
Tech Stack in Application Tier consist of iAS(1.0.2.2.2) & Developer 6i (Forms & Reports 8.0.6) but in Applications R12 it is build on Fusion Middleware (10g Web Server and 10g Forms & Reports)

    Sub component in Application Tier
    A) HTTP Server or Web Server in R12 is Version 10.1.3 which is built on Apache version 1.3.34. In apps 11i it is Version 1.0.2.2.2 built on Apache Version 1.3.19
    B) Jserv in apps 11i is replaced by OC4J (mod_jserv is replaced by mod_oc4j)
    C) Forms Version 6i in Apps 11i is replaced by Forms 10.1.2.0.2 in R12
    D) Reports Version 6i in Apps 11i is replaced by Reports 10.1.2.0.2 in R12
    E) JDBC version is changed from version 9 in apps 11i to version 10.2.0 in Apps R12
    F) modplsql or mod_pls is removed from Apps R12 (What will happen to my mod plsql applications- coming soon* )
    G) Java processes use JDK/JRE version 1.5.0 in R12 against JDK version 1.3.1 or 1.4.2 in Apps 11i
    H) For various environment variable changes check below picture

    I) New top INSTANCE_TOP added in Release 12 for configuration and log files

Migrating Fusion Middleware IM (OID/SSO) to new Host
    Saturday, April 07, 2007
    Register for R12 upgrade

Identity Management is Infrastructure Component of Fusion Middleware Family. It mainly consist of OID (Oracle Internet Directory), SSO (Single Sign-On), DIP (Directory Integration and Provisioning), DAS (Delegated Administrative Services) and CA (Certifying Authority). It also consist of database (repository) to hold data related above mentioned components.

In today's post I am going to cover overview or main steps of moving IM component (OID, SSO, DAS and DIP) to new Host/Machine.

In What Scenarios one has to move IdM to new Machine/Host ?

Few conditions in which one can consider moving Identity Management to new machine are
    1) Original Machine hold some other software/databases and load on that Server has increased considerably over initial deployment so you wish to move IdM to bigger machine.
    2) Migrating from one operating system to other (Corporate level decision to move from Solaris/HP machine to Linux System)
    3) You want to create DR site for Infrastructure Tier for disaster recovery (Don't stop LDAP replica in this scenarios)

    Assumptions made on this Migration

    1. This post does not cover moving Certifying Authority.
    2. Steps mentioned here are specific to version 10.1.2.0.2 which may change in future with new release (Though underlying steps might hold true for future version)
    3. You will use LDAP Based replica under High Availability Section while installing target instance (Though Database Advance replication will also work but I have not tested that)

    Broad Level Steps for Migration

    1. Install Infrastructure tier on New Machine
(Select High Availability and Replication and then Replication, LDAP Based during Installation)

    2. Migrate SSO and DIP data from Source to Target IdM instance
Use ssomig -import export tool for sso data
Use dipassistant reassociate tool for DIP data

    3. Repoint point Middle tier to New IdM or OID/SSO machine.
Use iAS Console for this. Click on Infrastructure Tab > Change
    Identity Management Section

Where to find more documentation ?
If you wish to read more about steps mentioned above follow below links

Software requirement for Red Hat 4 AS installation
    Installing OID in replicated Mode
Moving Identity Management to New Host

Thanks to you all for your comments and mail, Your feedback is quite important in improving this blog. Leave your comments about anything, like Topic you want to see on this post or How you find these posts ....

Oracle has now changed Oracle Apps DBA Certification track. New version now includes three exams focused on Apps DBA role (against previous Workflow & Sysadmin)

For full detail of exam click here http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=97
